Hands-on Research Methods

How to do your own experiments in psychology and education

As soon as you have found your first relevant article, STOP looking with keywords! (Hopefully, you were looking in a review article or found a relevant journal instead.)

Now search PsycINFO for the author's name, using the Advanced Search option.

You can see how to find authors step by step here.

This is MUCH more efficient that searching with keywords!

Check out the author(s) of the article that you have found and the authors that are in the reference list, as well. Usually, if researchers have published a study that is relevant for your research problem, then they will also have published several other relevant studies.

You can also try finding the authors’ personal web pages for a list of publications and sometimes the publications themselves. For example, Walter Kintsch is a well-known researcher in cognitive psychology. His homepage is here and it lists a few of his very many publications. Ted Gibson is another well-known research and his page at MIT has a more representative list of publications which can be downloaded right away from here.
